PAINT COLOR :: WHAT TO CHOOSE & HOW TO CHOOSE IT

Choosing the right color for a wall feels like choosing the name of your firstborn – there are so many options out there, and once you start comparing them, it feels like you are going to ruin everything if you choose wrong.

I’ve probably painted forty rooms, many which I’ve loved, some that I’ve regretted. So at this point I have a lot of swatches that are tried-and-true.

Whether you’re looking for something happy and bright or quiet and calming, check out these paints that I use again and again. And again.

RULES OF THUMB FOR COLOR PALETTES

GO TO WHITES

If you're working with whites...

Whites are the easiest shade to mix other colors with. When mixing whites, stick with mid-tone, low light colors. You don’t want to go with anything too primary. Tones on the warmer or cooler side will look much better when mixed with whites.

I see white environments as an opportunity to draw attention to elements that might otherwise be lost in a more colouful setting. The neutrality of white allows texture, shadow and light to become focal points rather than afterthoughts”

PERFECT PALETTE GRAYS

If you’re working with grays and taupes…

Grays and taupes look best with cool and earthy tones mixed in. You don’t want to go with anything too jarring. Stick with complimentary accents.

Painting walls grey is like dressing in black and white. It is versatile and always stylish, allowing you to embellish the overall effect with small dashes of other colours.
