SHAGGY HANDS :: DRESSED WALLS
We just love adding personal and handmade touches to all spaces we work on and one recent find was the beautiful work of Justine From @shaggyhands_uae
She's a fiber artist working with Macrame, dreamcatchers, wall hangings, weavings and more all custom made as per the clients needs! Her splendid hanging art is a mix of modern & boho and we were lucky to collaborate with Justine on a recent project in Abu Dhabi (more info on it soon) where she did her magic to deliver a truly unique art piece in the perfect colours and size for the space (it also hid an ugly DB & data board no other artwork would have covered!).
Please tell us about your business and what inspired you to start your business adventure?
Moving from NZ, where my home was ‘quaint’ to say the least, to Abu Dhabi where the villas are so much bigger and whiter, I really wanted to bring some warmth, texture and coziness to our home. I started toying with fabric art and found there are so many amazing styles off wallhangings that can make such a difference to the mood of a room...
I’ve always been a bit into upcycling furniture and DIY so I started making my own wall hangings and just can’t stop.
Where can we find your products?
I have a few on display at the Third Place Cafe, on the corniche in Abu Dhabi and am selling a handful on Dubai based website white-moss.com. However for now I am mostly enjoying making bespoke pieces designed to fit perfectly in specific spaces. You can view my work and get in touch with me on Instagram ...@shaggyhands_uae.
ABOUT LIVING IN DUBAI
What inspire you in/about Abu Dhabi?
Its the blend of cultures for sure! From an interiors perspective, I really love the influences from around the globe that we have here and love that each home you enter tells a story about where people are from and where they’ve travelled.
Favourite thing to do in City?
I’m a Mum of two young kids so that dictates a lot of what I do with my time. When they are at school though and I have some free time it’s either date morning with my husband at the pool at Jumeira Etihad Towers or trawling homewares stores in Yas Mall or Deerfield’s mall with a friend of mine that’s a likeminded interiors addict!
What's your favorite way to spend the weekend?
There’s always something on which is what I love about this city...markets, festivals, outdoor cinema, each weekend is different. I like to check out what’s happening, usually always there’s some kind of entertainment going on for the whole family.
A store you could spend hours browsing?
just one? I couldn’t name just one! West Elm, Zara Home, H&M Home, even ikea...is there a theme there??
A LITTLE EXTRA...
Things you can't live without?
Not so much a thing, but exercise is something I literally can not live without. Nobody wants to be around me if I haven’t had a chance to exercise for a while. Oh and coffee, definitely coffee!
As an entrepreneur please share some tips that help you set up?
its early days for me yet, and I’d definitely call myself more of a crafter/artist and less of a business person...At the moment I’m just enjoying spending my time exploring my creativity and seeing where it takes me. I think if you’re doing something that you love then it’s a great start.
Do you read any blog? If so which ones are your favorite?
To be honest I’m not a huge blog reader...but if I am in a waiting room or something and have the time, i like to read Stella and the Stars, Live Loud Girl, and of course harfnoondesigns blog. All local UAE interior bloggers so I’m getting info that’s pretty relevant to me.
Do you have a life motto?
Hmm, not really. But I think I am all about balance, most of my time is spent looking after my family but I know that for me to be able to do that properly I also need to exercise, have some sort of creative outlet, extend myself on a mental level and have some down time...So yeah, a bit of everything in moderation which sounds a bit like juggling act when I say it out loud.
